When Emotions Feel Overwhelming

You might notice your child withdrawing from activities they once enjoyed. Perhaps anxiety prevents them from participating in normal childhood experiences. Maybe explosive outbursts seem to come from nowhere. These patterns can leave you feeling helpless and worried about your child's future.

Emotional and behavioral difficulties create stress for the entire family:

  • You might feel worried about your child's emotional suffering and long-term wellbeing
  • You may experience confusion about what's normal emotional development versus concerning symptoms
  • You could feel guilty wondering if you caused these difficulties or missed warning signs
  • You might struggle knowing how to respond when your child is overwhelmed by emotions

At Newton Neuropsychology Group, we understand that emotional and behavioral concerns need thorough assessment. Our comprehensive evaluations identify specific mental health conditions and guide effective treatment planning.

What is an Evaluation for Emotional or Behavioral Disorders?

Emotional and behavioral disorders include conditions that affect mood, anxiety, thinking, and behavior. These are not character flaws or parenting failures, they are legitimate neurobiological conditions that impact how a person manages emotions and responds to stress. Because many conditions share overlapping symptoms, individuals often struggle to explain what they’re experiencing. A comprehensive psychological evaluation clarifies concerns, differentiates diagnoses, and guides appropriate treatment.

Common conditions we assess include:

  • Depression: persistent low or irritable mood, loss of interest, changes in sleep or appetite, low energy, difficulty concentrating, and feelings of worthlessness.

  • Anxiety disorders: excessive worry, social fear, panic episodes, phobias, or difficulty separating from caregivers.

  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: intrusive thoughts and repetitive behaviors used to reduce anxiety.

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: intrusive memories, avoidance, mood changes, and heightened vigilance following trauma.

  • Bipolar disorder: cycles of depression and periods of elevated mood or increased energy.

We also evaluate less common conditions, including personality and psychotic disorders when clinically appropriate. Accurate diagnosis ensures individuals receive the most effective, evidence-based care.

Validation of Experience

Diagnosis confirms that emotional suffering is real and not due to weakness or personal failing. This validation reduces shame and supports self-compassion.

Access to Support Services

Formal diagnosis may open access to school accommodations, disability services, support groups, or other resources designed for individuals with mental health conditions.

Moving Forward With or Without Treatment

Without accurate diagnosis and treatment, mental health conditions often persist or worsen. Depression may deepen over time. Anxiety can expand to affect more areas of life. Untreated mental health conditions can interfere with school performance, work functioning, relationships, and overall quality of life. Secondary problems like substance use may develop as individuals attempt to self-medicate emotional pain.

With proper evaluation and treatment, significant improvement becomes possible. Therapy provides skills to manage symptoms effectively. Medication, when appropriate, can significantly reduce symptom severity. Many individuals describe feeling like themselves again after appropriate treatment. Relationships improve. Academic or work performance increases. Quality of life is restored. While some mental health conditions are chronic, symptoms can be managed effectively with proper support.

How Psychological Assessment Works

01

Comprehensive Clinical Interview

We meet with you (and for child evaluations, with parents) for approximately one hour to understand current concerns, symptom history, previous treatment experiences, family history, developmental history, trauma exposure, and how symptoms affect daily functioning. This conversation provides essential context for interpreting assessment results.

02

Standardized Assessment

We conduct thorough psychological testing examining emotional functioning, behavioral patterns, personality characteristics, and symptom severity. Testing typically takes three to four hours for adults or four to five hours for children and adolescents. We use validated measures designed to assess specific mental health conditions. We may gather information from family members, teachers, or other individuals who observe functioning in different settings.

03

Diagnosis and Treatment Planning

Once we've analyzed all data, we schedule feedback to discuss findings comprehensively. We explain any diagnoses identified, describe how symptoms affect functioning, and provide specific treatment recommendations. These may include therapy referrals, medication evaluation suggestions, coping strategies, or lifestyle modifications. You receive a detailed written report documenting diagnoses and recommendations.

When Multiple Mental Health Conditions Are Present

Many individuals experience more than one mental health condition simultaneously. Depression and anxiety commonly co-occur. ADHD often exists alongside anxiety or depression. Trauma history can contribute to multiple conditions including PTSD, depression, and anxiety disorders.

When multiple conditions are present, treatment must address all concerns comprehensively. Treating only depression without addressing co-occurring anxiety may leave significant symptoms unresolved. Understanding the complete picture allows treatment providers to develop integrated approaches that address all relevant conditions.

Our comprehensive evaluation identifies all mental health conditions affecting functioning. We don't stop assessment once we identify one condition, we continue examining other possibilities to ensure nothing is missed. This thorough approach prevents situations where individuals receive partial treatment because not all conditions were recognized.

Common Questions About Emotional or Behavioral Evaluation

  • Is evaluation only for severe problems?

No. Evaluation can be helpful any time emotional or behavioral concerns interfere with functioning, cause distress, or create worry. Early identification and treatment often prevent symptoms from becoming more severe.

  • Will my child need medication?

Not necessarily. Evaluation provides information to support decision-making about treatment options. Many mental health conditions respond well to therapy alone. Medication may be recommended for moderate to severe symptoms or when therapy alone hasn't been sufficient.

  • What if I'm worried about getting a diagnosis?

Diagnosis provides understanding and access to appropriate treatment, not limiting labels. Many individuals describe relief after diagnosis because they finally understand their experiences and know what will help. Diagnosis is a tool for accessing support, not a permanent limitation

  • Can emotional problems be differentiated from typical development?

Yes. Our clinicians have expertise in understanding normal emotional development versus clinical symptoms requiring intervention. We consider age-appropriate behaviors and developmental expectations when determining whether symptoms constitute a mental health condition.
