What to Expect From the Evaluation Process

A neuropsychological evaluation helps determine your unique cognitive and emotional profile. Through standardized testing and clinical interviews, we assess how your brain:

  • Processes information
  • Manages attention
  • Stores memories
  • And regulates emotions.

Our evaluations identify specific learning disorders, differentiate between conditions with overlapping symptoms, assess cognitive changes following medical conditions, and establish eligibility for school services and workplace accommodations. Without accurate diagnosis, it's difficult to know which interventions will help.

How Neuropsychological Assessment Works

01

Initial Intake Interview (One Hour)

We meet with you to review your history, current concerns, and specific questions. For child evaluations, typically just parents attend. This conversation helps us tailor the testing battery to your situation.

02

Testing Session (Three to Six Hours)

Testing takes place in our Newton office. Adults typically complete testing in three to four hours. Children generally need five to six hours. After testing, we may contact teachers or providers to gather additional perspective.

03

Feedback Session

Once we've analyzed test data, we schedule feedback to present and discuss results, explain diagnoses, and review specific recommendations. You receive a detailed written report with concrete next steps.

The Value of Accurate Diagnosis

Many cognitive and behavioral conditions share similar symptoms. A child who can't focus might have ADHD, anxiety about schoolwork, a learning disorder, or giftedness. An adult experiencing forgetfulness might be dealing with stress, ADHD, depression, or cognitive decline.

Our comprehensive approach differentiates between overlapping conditions using multiple assessment methods. This thorough process identifies not just what difficulties you're experiencing, but why they're happening and what will help. Accurate diagnosis opens doors to appropriate support, determines which medications might be helpful, guides therapy approaches, and establishes eligibility for accommodations.

We evaluate children as young as 12 months. For memory evaluations, we also offer fast-track options that expedite the process.
